Dany's RaaD Roundup

This Week in The Daily Show for March 5th, 2011 and the New Dead Island Game Trailer

Here is a great find by the Daily Show team of how when the issue is people making over $250K/year in business with giant benefits packages, 24 hour news pundits feel one way, but once you knock more than $150k/year off their yearly earnings and call them teachers, they are now treated as scum.

When it comes to unions, any deal where it becomes virtually impossible to fire workers is bad, just look at the NY teacher rubber rooms where bad teachers just sit in rooms away from students all day and wait years before their disciplinary hearings… but that doesn’t mean that unions are bad and should be abolished and if you can’t reneg on Wall Street bonus contracts, why is it rational to do just that with union contracts? If you want to join a union, you should have that option. Unions for the public sector though are a bit tricky because the government can’t really fold and the money the workers get paid are not the politician’s money, it belongs to the constituents of the state, so any deal an official makes to increase longterm benefits only comes into play years after they are no longer on the hook for making the deal, while in the private sector, the owners that agree to these contracts are on the hook if they make a bad deal because the business could fail and have to close its doors.

Here is an interesting interview with the Jordanian Ambassador Prince Zeid Ra’ad. King Abdullah has already dismantled the previous government, but I don’t think anyone yet knows what will come of his changes. The prince brings up some interesting possibilities, like what happens if the region unfolds into a battle between the Sunni‘s and Shia‘s on top of between the middle eastern countries that have already modernized vs the more conservative countries.

Here’s just a bit of the absurdity what’s going on in Libya. With Muammar Gaddafi seeming to have lost his mind, although I don’t know how recent an event that actually is.

Allison Stanger tries to explain just how much money is flowing from the US government to military contractors for her new book One Nation Under Contract. One point she brings up is that because there was no military draft, that changed the political discussion over going into Iraq and how we probably would not have gone into Iraq like we did if a draft was a possibility.

Diane Ravitch talks about how complicated the issue of education is. How we stack up worldwide and what poverty does to education. Her book is The Death and Life of the Great American School System. I still think there needs to be a better way in a lot of these school districts to get rid of bad teachers, but it’s hard to put all the blame on them without dealing with the issues behind why the kids are doing badly in school. Teachers can’t make kids go to school and they can’t make them do their homework, sometimes the blame for why children do poorly in school is because of their family or their family situation.

Lastly on a different note, thanks to the 404 episode465 (subscribe here) for letting me know about the new Dead Island video game trailer. I know the game won’t end up looking like this ultimately, but it certainly has piqued my interest.

Enjoy

Mortal Kombat Rebirth Trailer

For anyone (especially boys) who grew up in the 90’s, Mortal Kombat was a big part of video gaming. Well, this new trailer with Jeri Ryan brings a new life to the Mortal Kombat on the big screen. It’s a totally re-imagined, taking out the supernatural aspects behind the story and turns them into criminals and serial killers. It is an extremely high quality 8 minute trailer.

Thanks to The 404 (subscribe here) for the heads up.

Do You Wanna Date My Avatar? – The Guild

Vodpod videos no longer available.

OK, anyone with any geek credibility already knows who Felicia Day is since she was on the last season of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series, she starred in Dr. Horrible and she created and stars in The Guild. Now she and the cast of The Guild have produced a great geek oriented music video that feeds on the MMORPG theme that The Guild is based on.

Viral Video Chart

I’m always looking for the hottest, funniest and most prescient videos each week, well, after listening to Net@Nite (subscribe here) I gave ViralVideoChart (subscribe here) a look and since I found the site, I’ve seen all the videos people are talking about all on their front page, like Sarah Palin Pardoning a Turkey Interview, Cat Drives Roomba and the delightful ad created by the Guitar Hero folks: Bike Hero.

My favorite though, since I’m a huge geek is the Star Wars a capella Tribute to John Williams which was featured on that episode of Net@Nite along with the video’s creator: Corey Vidal (ApprenticeA).

Claymation Chess

I might just be a sucker for claymation, but I found this great movie of a claymation chess (Digg it here) game after watching Best of Youtube (subscribe here). It reminds me somewhat of the old Battle Chess game from the pre-Windows days, I still remember playing it for hours on my first IBM computer, running on DOS.

Sharing My Insanity

I thought you’d appreciate the crazy… I wanted to order some minor electronics to help me build an LED circuit (a capacitor and a timer), which totaled $3 and change, but when I saw that the shipping charge alone was over $6 and the fact that RadioShack.com has a similar deal to Amazon (free shipping on $25+ orders).

So, I went sifting though the Radio Shack site for some other things that I already was going to buy to bump it up to $25. I started with everything on my Amazon wish lists (ex: Hellgate: London and Soon I Will Be Invincible) and got nothing, but I then started looking at video games and stumbled on Lego Star Wars The Complete Saga… I had wanted to get the game for a while, especially since the only real knock against it that I had heard/read was that it was not very new or different from older versions of the game, but since I have never played any version of the game, I figure that I’ll fully enjoy it all for the first time.

So, I ended up getting a $49.99 game that I wanted so that I could avoid $6 shipping on a $3 item.

Just thought I should share the insanity with you.

The Guild

After watching the latest Mahalo Daily, I decided to check out the live action show, The Guild. It’s pretty funny, in a creepy sort of way. It makes fun of online gaming, especially MMORPGs. I’m addicted.

You can also get it though iTunes here or get it directly here.

Thanks to WatchTheGuild for the above pic.

Picnicface: NFL Crunch Time

From the creator of Powerthirst comes NFL Crunch Time, a hilarious take on the state of modern sports video games and how they keep trying to add non-sports aspects to these games.

Thanks again to CHTV for sending this out via podcast.

Street Fighter: The Later Years

Ever since the end of 2006, College Humor has been releasing a series of videos that is a combination video game homage and spoof called Street Fighter: The Later Years. This series far exceeds Street Fighter: The Movie, which starred Jean-Claude Van Damme, Raul Julia and Ming-Na.

For anyone who grew up during the 1980’s, the Street Fighter video game series, especially Street Fighter II, was THE epic game while growing up, bringing nonsense phrases like “root-raww, root-raww, root-raww” into our consciousnesses.

The original versions of Episodes one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight and nine are all available here. Thanks CHTV for bringing these videos to my lazy self via free iTunes podcast.

Most Destructive Weapon in Doom

Remeber the game Doom? I used to spend HOURS with this game, but I completely forgot just how powerful some of the weapons in the game were. At the risk of being Rick Rolled, check out the great video below, it’s only 31 seconds and it’s hilarious!

Thanks to The Digg Reel, their latest episode pointed out just how popular this video has become, which was originally posted here on College Humor.
