US State of the Union and the Republican Response 2011

Last night President Obama took to the airways and gave his State of the Union speech in front of Congress to the US. If you missed it, I have posted it below.

After the State of the Union, Rep Paul Ryan gave the Republican Response to the President’s speech, you can see that video below if you did not get a chance to see that as well.

After watching both speeches, it is clear that the two men have different views of what makes America strong, but I have to hope that with all the areas that they agree, in the end, good laws and reforms will come from it. I do not believe that in the end, the entire 2010 health care reform bill will be repealed, but the most egregious sections of it will get changed. Reducing our deficit will not be easy, but cuts to research will only handicap our future and any reform to seriously cut spending will have to deal with both military spending and entitlement spending like Medicare, Medicaid Social Security and other healthcare related programs, since those programs alone already account for over 80% of our federal spending(image below) which come from this federal spending breakdown (image below).

Super Mario Audiobook Miniature, The Daily Show and Colbert Report Roundup for the Week of November 13th, 2010

I came across this audio short story from the Podcastle series (subscribe here) called Mario’s Three Lives. Anyone who grew up playing the Mario franchise of games should enjoy this 8min short audio story, I know I did! How can you go wrong with any story rated Rated PG “for plumbers, philosophy, and good ol’ fashioned shrooms?” The story is by Matt Bell:
Mario’s Three Lives

Jon Stewart comments on all the people commenting on his Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear, then about Keith Olbermann’s suspension. Later in the week Jon Stewart sats down for Rachel Maddow to interview him for 50min. He talks about the reaction to his recent rally in Washington, DC. He then talks about how he tries to see the political news as a climate scientist compared to the 24hr cable news channels that seem to only report the weather. It’s a great interview.

Debunking the huge costs that Glenn Beck and Fox News commented on, which probably costs more like ~$5million/day, what’s being wrong by overestimating costs by ~$195million/day when you can insult President Obama‘s decision making for a week? Thanks to Factcheck.org and Snopes for the sourcing of RATIONAL numbers, I’ll take their sourcing over an “anonymous Indian official” any day.

Texas Governor Rick Perry does an extended interview to promote his new book Fed Up! I must say, he is quite riveting and learned person to listen to, but I am also glad that he is not my governor.

All I can say is, who knew that Obama lost his dancing shoes somewhere between his inauguration and today?

I didn’t know I wanted a McRib, but I doubt President Bush will and Harrison Ford agrees with me (that’s right, Han Solo/Indiana Jones agrees with ME) while he promotes his new movie Morning Glory. The next night Jon shows all the different places President Bush was interviewed recently.

I don’t know how Rand Paul can say there are no rich, poor or middle class, that just blows my mind. It will be interesting to see how this libertarian and Tea Party member governs over the next couple of years.

Abbe Lowell helps explain how likely it is that in 2011 there will be a lot of investigations in the House of Representatives.

I know I don’t usually do music, it’s not my thing, but this week, there seems to be quite a bit of it. If you like music, you’ve gotta hear Quincy Jones, he has a new book Q on Producing and a new album Q: Soul Bossa Nostra.

Cee Lo Green has this dirty little song on his new album The Lady Killer, so if you don’t want to hear or read the explicit language. just stop here… OK, for everyone else, the song is called Fuck You (music video). He does an interview with Colbert, then performs said song below, again, beware the foul language. He sounds a bit like Gnarls Barkley… just way more cursing.

China’s 360 Motorcycle Flip

When most people get into an accident on their bike, especially against a light pickup truck, usually VERY bad things happen to them… I am sure most do not end up flipping and landing on their feet and appearing relatively healthy, if not just a bit stunned.

I guess with over a billion people in China, the chances of almost ANYTHING happening improves exponentially, but to catch the whole thing on film seems to make it even more rare.

Thanks to Devon for providing this clip.

This Week in News with The Daily Show and The Colbert Report for October 16th, 2010

This week there was a walk off by Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg when Bill O’Reilly came on The View to promote Pinheads and Patriots, when he said Muslims attacked us on 9/11, but I searched for the video of the ENTIRE segment because when you watch the entire 14 minute segment, instead of just the standard 5 minute version of the video that is circulating the internet. The FULL version shows that the walk off was much ado about nothing, and I agree with Barbara Walters that it should not have happened because political discussions should commence in a way that people don’t just blow up and walk away, we should be able to talk out our differences civilly. Shortly after the ladies walked off stage, Bill O’Reilly amended what he originally said to rearticulate his point in a way that even the most knee-jerk liberal could agree with. All in all, it’s a non-story, if anything, showing just how uncivil our discussions on politics have become. I agree with O’Reilly‘s final, amended, stance on the 9/11 attack and who attacked America. Thanks Devon for telling my about this event.

Condoleezza Rice promotes her book Extrordinary Ordinary People where she shares her view of just how important an education is to give the best chance at success in life. Now that is a message I can get behind. I just wish that it wasn’t so expensive to actually get that type of solid education.

GOATS ARE TAKING AMERICAN JOBS! In this case, the scapegoats… are actual goats. There are very few times in history when goats were being scapegoated, unless you count when goats assassinated Archduke Ferdinand.

Another Week of The Daily Show

It’s been another week of The Daily Show, so I’ve rounded up the best segments from the week of October 5th, 2009.

Here is the United States Secretary of the Navy, Ray Mabus

Apparently the US President Obama is snubbing the Dali Lama and Tibet to appease China, most likely because we want them to side with us against Iran… oh yeah, also because we owe them a TON of money so that we can keep buying their goods
