President Barak Obama Takes Over The Daily Show the week of October 29th

President Obama spends the entire episode of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. You don’t need my comments on it, so all I will say is if you are eligible to vote in this year’s election just go out and vote.

From 1989-2010 John McCain has been deriding the broken Washington system. I could do without the bit of ageism from Stewart, but other than that, it is another example of the great video archive search work they do on the show.

NPR may be a lot of things for firing Juan Williams, but I doubt they’re an agent of a jihadi inquisition! Fox News doesn’t just fight back, they always bring the big guns with them. I think some of these “scandals” are just ways to fill time in the 24 hour news cycle. If you read the press from NPR as to why they fired Mr. Williams, it has just as much to do with Mr. Williams’ constantly appearing on Fox News in a manner that NPR did not like.

China’s 360 Motorcycle Flip

When most people get into an accident on their bike, especially against a light pickup truck, usually VERY bad things happen to them… I am sure most do not end up flipping and landing on their feet and appearing relatively healthy, if not just a bit stunned.

I guess with over a billion people in China, the chances of almost ANYTHING happening improves exponentially, but to catch the whole thing on film seems to make it even more rare.

Thanks to Devon for providing this clip.

Market Street – San Francisco Days Before the April 18th, 1906 Earthquake

If you have problems watching the above video, see it here.

60 Minutes came out with a story last week of a restored movie from 1906 simply called Market Street, an 11 minute film during the early days of film making. Amazingly, the film was shot in San Francisco just 11 days before the April 18th earthquake of 1906.

I wanted to present both the story that 60 Minutes aired (above) as well as the full uninterrupted movie (below). As well, I wanted to show just some panoramic pictures of SF in the aftermath of the quake. It is pretty amazing just how much a major US city changed in just a little over 100 years.

Dylan Ratigan Rants on the Idea of a War with Islam

This is especially prescient since most American’s have no idea who Wahabis are, but I have never seen a group of pundits awed into silence over comments like this from Dylan Ratigan on MSNBC’s Morning Joe:

This Week in News with The Daily Show and The Colbert Report for October 16th, 2010

This week there was a walk off by Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg when Bill O’Reilly came on The View to promote Pinheads and Patriots, when he said Muslims attacked us on 9/11, but I searched for the video of the ENTIRE segment because when you watch the entire 14 minute segment, instead of just the standard 5 minute version of the video that is circulating the internet. The FULL version shows that the walk off was much ado about nothing, and I agree with Barbara Walters that it should not have happened because political discussions should commence in a way that people don’t just blow up and walk away, we should be able to talk out our differences civilly. Shortly after the ladies walked off stage, Bill O’Reilly amended what he originally said to rearticulate his point in a way that even the most knee-jerk liberal could agree with. All in all, it’s a non-story, if anything, showing just how uncivil our discussions on politics have become. I agree with O’Reilly‘s final, amended, stance on the 9/11 attack and who attacked America. Thanks Devon for telling my about this event.

This Week’s Daily Show and Colbert Roundup for October 8th, 2010

The consensus is in, Rahm Emanuel might just be a dick and that’s OK he seems to get things done in the molasses environment that is politics. let us see how he does in running for mayor of Chicago.

Apparently, in the 1940’s American scientists intentionally gave Guatemalans syphilis to test penicillin in treating this and the NIH funded this! This Guatemala experiment is some of the most despicable research ever conducted on humans and it is very hard to find experiments that are worse than the Tuskegee syphilis studies. You don’t have to watch the 2nd half of that clip, the Jason Jones‘ segment about the military wasn’t very good.

All I can say is that this is Bruce Willis going on David Letterman this week with a meat hairpiece after the Lady Gaga’s meat dress. I’ve never been a big fan of Dave, but he did partake in a bit of a gnash, which was was cool.

I do not like the idea of strategic defaults, but it is not a new concept and if any party that signs a financial contract is willing to take that hit to their credit score and walk away from their morgage, let them. When busineses walk away from corporate offices, there’s no reason why homeowners should be shamed into paying into a morgage that no longer makes financial sense either.

Personal freedom vs health and protection is tough. As a medical student, I know how bad it can be for people to drink raw, unpasteurized milk, so I would prefer that people only drink pasteurized milk. At the same time however, I do believe that Americans have the inherent freedom to do things that may not be in their best interests. I would say that the government just treat foods like raw milk in the same way they treat other dangerous lifestyle choices like smoking. Mandate warning labels be placed on the bottles of milk that inform those that buy the milk of the possible negative side effects of drinking that milk and then let fully informed consumers decide for themselves what they want to put in their own body.

Proposition 19 to legalize marijuana is back in the media. I don’t think marijuana is all that good for you, medically it has its uses, but as for recreational use, I say legalize it, tax it and regulate it as we already do for alcohol, tobacco and firearms. If people want to do it in their home and not hurt anyone else, fine by me, just don’t endanger anyone else by, for example, do not drive while high. Treat it the same way we do alcohol and tobacco.

I have no problem with senators like Tom Coburn holding up bills, but I do have a problem the Senate having rules for secret holds to bills of any kind. I believe there are some topics so sensitive to national security that they be kept secret, but that’s about all that should be secret in politics, everything else should be open and exposed to harsh daylight for people to decide if they like what the people they voted into office are doing for or to the country

I guess when something is not a part of military policy, it never ever happens. Being gay or strait should have no bearing if you want to volunteer to be a part of the US miliatary, if you are brave enough to join and can pass the requirements everyone else has to pass, that should be all that is needed. It is cowardly that Congress is waiting until December, when the military survey on how best to integrate the policy change is finished, since it was undertaken in anticipation of the law being changed, not to ask the soldiers IF it should be changed.
