Google Launches 2010 US Election Tracker

It looks like in Google‘s attempt to organize all knowledge, has teamed up with many different political tracking sites to create their 2010 US Election Tracker which is laid on top of Google Maps.

It has an easy to use interface, where you can see all the different projections for the likely outcome of different House, Senate and Gubernatorial races across the entire country in every district, along with all the different candidates in each race, I did notice (and was very disappointed) though that it only seems to list the Republican and Democratic candidates while excluding the independent and 3rd party candidates. I hope that between now and the November 2nd election, they fix this oversight.

Enjoy

The Daily Show Roundup and Colbert at Congress for September 26th, 2010

I don’t know if it’s hilarious or sad when Stephen Colbert can testify in front of Congress “in character” from his show The Colbert Report. I am unsure because I don’t know if the members of Congress are in touch enough to even understand that he IS “in character.” Thanks to Brian for sending me this story (you can watch the entire hearing here, where you can see Colbert answer questions and comments at 62, 69, 103, 108 and 116minutes into the hearin, sometimes seriously and other times comically).

It’s funny to watch Karl Rove turn on a DIME with his political opinions with the load of the Tea Party movement pressure. It will be an interesting election this November if even 1/2 of the people running with the Tea Party make it into office.

I don’t know what’s gotten into the booking team over at The Daily Show, but they got former President Jimmy Carter. Over the past 2 weeks there have been 3 former heads of state and 1 current head of state on the show. President Carter is promoting his book White House Diary.

This is a good look at the difference between the talking points of Obama‘s campaign vs once he became President

Here’s another painful look at how the sausage is made in congress or maybe how they fight to avoid making that sausage sometimes. Is it any wonder why an overwhelming number of Americans hate Congress?

It’s amazing when the Republican Pledge for new ideas is just exactly the same old ideas all over again and they ADMIT that they will not change at all

It’s wonderful to hear a truly moderate view of the international political process, King Abdullah II of Jordan. I can only hope that the moderates take over by the end of this month and the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks continue forward to a good end. I wish I didn’t doubt the chances of success, but I can only hope to be wrong.

The Daily Show with Former Heads of State Bill Clinton and Tony Blair September 18th, 2010

This week seemed to be a stellar week for the Daily Show’s booking team. They were able to get both former President Bill Clinton and former Prime Minister of the UK, Tony Blair.

Bill Clinton stops by for an interview, he even comes out with a list of ideas on how how to improve the economy, I highly recommend you watch this political master at work, especially clips 3 and 4 of this extended interview.

To keep the political theme alive, apparently ever since Andy Griffith did a PSA promoting some of the positive points about the passage of the recent healthcare bill, his popularity has plummeted.

The politics just keeps on coming this week, I do love hearing about crazy local election candidates, I’d say more but “NOT the whiteman’s bitch'” already says so much.

Stewart is holding rally to restore sanity on Oct-30-2010 just before national elections this November, it should be very interesting.

The Daily Show Review for September 11th, 2010

Today is the 9th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the USA. It would have been nice to present news that was more appropriate to the day, but most of the news this week that registered in the media was just about as negative as you can get. I hope you can find the humor in some of these clips to help make you laugh and enjoy this sad anniversary.

Here are some clips mostly from The Daily Show that revolve around Islam in America, building mosques, burning holy books and the crazy people that make the news.

Jon Stewart pointing out that Fox News is the master of 24 hour news spin while MSNBC and CNN have no chance to shape a news cycle narrative.

Who knew to be afraid of Staten Island… even when you agree with their ultimate decision on jurisprudence?!!? You have to love democracy.

Meghan McCain seems to be a part of the Republican party that I wish existed, but seems to continuously get drown out by those that are more firey and negative in her party. Ms. McCain makes some interesting comments about being on the campaign trail, especially concerning the Palins and how childrens’ images can rub off on their political parents. I can hope that one day her ideal of the Republican party wins out over the abrasive party currently in the news, I just don’t see it happening any time soon.

Maybe we can take some good news hot off the presses now, that there will be no Qurans burned by the radical Florida pastor, instead, he is in NYC today to try and meet with the people that want to build the lower Manhattan mosque.

Thanks to Nate for the Islamophobia clip

Bob Newhart – Stop It!!

Here is a great sketch from Bob Newhart on MADtv. I probably would not use his therapeutic technique… probably.

Apple’s New Toys for the 2010 Holliday Season

Steve Jobs made quite a few announcements about newer smaller  iPod shuffles, iPod nanos, iPod touches, a new iTunes and a new Apple TV along with many more updates on September 1st. You can watch the whole 90min conference here (subscribe to their keynote podcast here) including a performance at the end from the lead of Coldplay, Chris Martin. You can watch the musical performance here:

Of all the announcements, I thought the most interesting were the new social network Ping that is built into the new iTunes store, also accessible on the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. They made a big deal about having over 160 million customers already with access to the store itself who now have access to this music social network. Considering that you’ll now be able to follow your favorite artists and friends, get local concert information, post videos, music and photos and get customized music suggestions based on who you follow, the facebooks, myspaces and twitters of the world should be wary, especially since Apple has a clear business model already tied into this network since it’s another way to open up people to new songs, albums and artists. It’s only a matter of time before this expands to include TV shows and movies. Facebook’s 500+ million worldwide active users still seems to top the charts, but I’m guessing Mark Zuckerberg‘s ears perked up when he heard this news.

The other interesting story from the conference I felt was the new Apple TV. Jobs admitted that since 2006, when the original Apple TV launched it wasn’t the biggest hit, but now they have added a lot of new features to integrate it with all the other products, with the ability to stream content (movies, TV shows and photos) from their computers, iPads, iPhones and iPod touches.¬† They added Netflix streaming support for Netflix subscribers along with TV show and movie rentals ranging from 99cents up to $4.99 for new movies being released on the same date as their dvd, there is also the ability to listen to and watch all the podcasts you subscribe to, which brings online content almost onto an equal playing field as movies and TV shows for access to your HD TV. The new Apple TV box is a lot smaller than before (the box almost fits in the palm of Steve Jobs’ hand),¬† probably because there’s no storage space on the device (everything works via streaming internet), the menu system seems easy to use. You’ll need a TV with an HDMI port since that’s the only output port, but it has built in WiFi and an Ethernet port for faster connections. I think with the new $99 price point for the Apple TV, they will basically put Roku‘s streaming box and anyone else like them right out of the market.

The photographer in me was very impressed with the demo of the new camera feature that was added to the iPod touch camera, high dynamic range (HDR) option. Using this, you can take a picture in bright light and the camera will take 3 quick pictures in succession, one at normal exposure, another underexposed one to bring out the colors from a bright sky and a third picture that is overexposed to bring out the dark sections of the picture and then blending the three pictures together to have a final photo with an enormous dynamic range of color and detail in the shot. Here is one example Apple has up on their site:

and here is an example that the great folks at AppleInsider created with their iPod touch with the original on the left and the HDR image on the right:

Thanks to Apple and AppleInsider for the above pictures. Also, if you want to see some professional HDR images from higher-end cameras check out this Flickr page and SmashingMagazine.
