George Carlin Tribute

After George Carlin died, you realize just what a loss it is to the comedy world, especially with all the work he did behind the scenes with young up-and-coming comedians. Jerry Seinfeld wrote an op-ed about his friend in the New York Times and I wanted to share it here, which I found out about on a recent Larry King Live (subscribe here) interview with Seinfeld.

Thanks to Chemistryland for the above pic.

Wayne’s World Returned on the MTV Movie Awards

I never watch MTV, so I didn’t see the MTV Movie Awards, but thanks to Dan Trachtenberg from the Totally Rad Show (subscribe here) for pointing out that as part of Mike Myers hosting the award show this year, he got Dana Carvey to make an appearance and the two revived a huge hit from their past: Wayne’s World.

It’s hard to believe that it has been 14 years since we last got some Wayne’s World, but you can watch the video from MTV here as well as watch the entire award show if you like as well, the whole show is available online.

Enjoy

College Musical From The Monkey Box

I know most have heard of High School Musical, but the sketch comedy gang The Monkey Box (subscribe here) created a somewhat darker comedy trailer for the musical College Musical.

Ahh, memories…

Women Are DAMN Funny!

Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, and Tina Fey photographed by Annie Leibovitz from Vanity Fair

I don’t normally read Vanity Fair, but my grandmother does and she knows that I LOVE comedians, so she saved this article about a dozen of the craziest and most gut bustingly funny female comedians in the entertainment industry today for me.

Any article that covers Sarah Silverman, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph at the same time is DEFINITELY worth your time!

Check it out here. Also, it helps that the photography for this article was done by Annie Leibovitz, she’s a wonderful photographer.

Semi-Pro

I wasn’t sure what to make from the trailers for Semi-Pro, it looked a bit stupid to be honest, but after watching the film, I realize it was COMPLETELY stupid, but in probably the funniest possible way. I loved this movie, I was laughing so loudly during so many different scenes, it was great seeing Andy Richter in the film as well, I always like seeing him, I wish his career had really taken off after he walked away from being the Late Night with Conan O’Brien sidekick.

It was also great seeing Maura Tierney in the movie, it was odd seeing her though, since the last movies I saw with her in it were Insomnia and Scotland, Pa. I’m used to seeing her on the now defunct Newsradio and ER. Her storyline with Woody Harrelson brought a little bit of cinema into what was otherwise a pure comidic farce of a film.

Without giving anything away, having scenes like that the bear fight and the origin of commonplace modern basketball moves really made this a killer comedy.

Thanks to Film School Rejects for the above poster pic.

Sarah Silverman and Jimmy Kimmel Fight - TMI

This first clip is from when Sarah Silverman came on the Jimmy Kimmel Live and wanted to antagonize him a bit, since Kimmel is Silverman’s longtime boyfriend, so she announced that Sarah Silverman is Fucking Matt Damon. There is a bit of a back story here, Jimmy Kimmel has had a longrunning gag on his show that at the end of his show he’ll announce that he ran out of time in the show and has to bump Matt Damon from appearing. I would set up a link to the official music video of all this on ABC.com, but in their infinite wisdom, they don’t allow you to link directly to their content, maybe they’d rather have people watch the whole thing on youtube, so go to their music video section and you can find it, but that’s why I provided all the youtube links here anyway.

This second clip (below) is Kimmel’s video response to the first clip from Sarah Silverman, Jimmy Kimmel is Fucking Ben Affleck and he co-opts Ben Affleck, Brad Pitt, Robin Williams, Don Cheadle, Harrison Ford, Cameron Diaz, among many many others We Are the World style for it.

This whole fake feud is hilarious! Thanks to Net@Nite for the heads up about these videos.

Conan vs Stewart and Colbert - The Biggest Late Night Fight!

After watching tonights extremely long Academy Awards, hosted by Jon Stewart, it reminded me of the very long and hilarious feud and ensuing brawl that involved Conan O’Brien, Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart. The whole thing is documented in this 8 plus minute clip from Late Night with Conan O’Brien, which all started over Mike Huckabee.

Bee an American Gangster

You may think you remember what Denzel as a bad man was from Training Day, but from the opening scene of this film, you know you are in store for an entirely different kind of BAD MAN. This movie is not for the squeamish, the film has enough violence and death to fill its almost 160 min runtime. The story takes place during the late 1960’s and 1970’s during the Vietnam War and a very dark time in NYC police history in relation to the drug war in and around President Nixon’s famous decree in 1971.

At first I thought Denzel was going to overpower what seemed to be a much muted Russell Crowe, but soon I realized that Ridley Scott wanted to build up Crowe’s character slowly while pouring on the overpowering presence of Denzel Washington.

It was interesting seeing how Scott juxtaposed the corrupt NYC Special Detective (Josh Brolin) with the strait and narrow NJ detective (Russell Crowe).

This is another big movie with Ted Levine playing as cop, which makes me smile, considering he is probably most remembered as Buffalo Bill in The Silence of the Lambs. For all you Serenity fans out there, Chiwetel Ejiofor (you know him as The Operative) plays Denzel’s brother and right hand man. What’s sad is that this is probably the best movie Cuba Gooding Jr. has been involved with in a decade (As Good as It Gets) and he really didn’t do anything too special in this film either…

I am certainly glad to have ended the night with Bee Movie at the tail of this double feature. Even though American Gangster was enthralling, Bee Movie served as a hilarious cleanse of my palette.

Jerry Seinfeld really knocked this one out of the park. Almost the entire way through I was laughing. It was funny though, because I ended up seeing the 9:30pm showing, The only people younger than me in the audience was a group of 17-19 year olds! Regardless of the lack of kids in the theater, the audience was cracking up the entire time as well.

The only thing that threw me for a loop in the film was that it was rated PG and then about 3/4 the way through the film, the word suicide is mentioned, which is probably what pushed it away from a G rating, it was all in good fun, the moment passed with yet another funny joke inserted to break any sign of tension in the scene. I would check with the MPAA about this, but since I hate them, I really couldn’t care less what they rated the film.

The cameos are great in this movie, both Patrick Warburton and Rip Torn are having a lot of fun in this film. Other celebrities that lend their voices to the film include Renée Zellweger, Matthew Broderick, John Goodman, Chris Rock, Kathy Bates, Oprah Winfrey, Larry Miller, Megan Mullally, Tom Papa and Larry King (playing Bee Larry King, of course, yet again showing how cool he is)… even Michael Richards made an lent his voice to the project according to imdb!

I recommend both movies to adults, but only Bee Movie to children.

Thanks to Jeff Milner for the pic.

Bee Movie May Just Turn Honey Funny

I remember watching the live action promotions for this film at the beginning of the year, but after seeing the Bee Movie ad campaign plastered all over NYC telling me that Honey Just Got Funny (thanks slashfilm) over the past few weeks, it made me not want to see this film, also, the film was created by Dreamworks Animation and I’ve had mixed results with their animated movies. I loved ANTZ (How could I not enjoy a Woody Allen movie… just with the entire cast playing ants?), thought Madagascar (which also starred Chris Rock) was pretty funny and heard good things about Over the Headge (but never got around to seeing it), yet I HATED Shrek and never wanted to watch the rest of the Shrek trilogy. In the end, I decided to watch the trailer on Yahoo! trailers. I was reluctant, but with Jerry Seinfeld and Chris Rock in the film, I HAD to give Bee Movie a look.

I loved that they used the song Brazil as the opening theme to the trailer (a very good sign) and I must say, the trailer had me laughing , maybe honey DID just get funny! Hearing Jerry reminded me just how much I missed Seinfeld.

If you want to see the HD trailer, you can get it here, otherwise, just give the SD trailer a look below. You can also see the other clips I was talking about here too.

Never Not Funny

About a week ago I found a hilarious podcast with a group of comedians, hosted by Jimmy Pardo. Pardo named the show Never Not Funny and the name fits quite well. The show isn’t about anything in particular, but I’ve listened to 9 episodes thus far and at times it had me on the floor laughing or even walking down the street cracking up with people staring at me. The show comes out weekly and runs about 70 minutes.

If you use iTunes to manage your subscriptions, you can subscribe here.

Comedy Central Stand-Up

Apparently, Comedy Central recently held an amateur comedian contest called Open Mic Fight and the winner was Mo Mandel. The only reason I know about this is from the Comedy Central Stand-Up video podcast (get it through iTunes here).

In celebration of Mo Mandel’s win, I’ve also posted his 6+ minute routine. Let this be inspiration for all of you Open Mic hopefuls (you know who you are).

SNL Politics in Full Swing

After watching Saturday Night Live this week, I knew I had to share… Darrell Hammond and Amy Poehler absolutely nail their impressions of Bill and Hillary Clinton, while in two separate sketches, Fred Armisen does the best impression of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Yes, I know it’s almost the end of the week at this point and we’re closer to the airing of a newer episode than the one I’m talking about, but just in case, take a look at some of what you missed.

Onion - Situation In Nigeria Seems Pretty Complex

The Onion has released yet another funny fake news video of a panel trying to discuss a news story coming from Nigeria, when only the moderator of the panel has any idea what is going on in the country. Watching an entire panel trying to sound like they all know what they are talking about, when they probably couldn’t even point out the country on the map, just like a lot of US Americans, is absolutely side splitting.

Subscribe to their future videos through iTunes over here, otherwise, subscribe here or just watch the video below.

The Sarah Silverman Program!?!?!?

Sexy Sarah Silverman

OK, why has NO ONE told me that Sarah Silverman has her own show (restarting Wed, Oct 3 at 10:30pm eastern time) on Comedy Central?!?! Everyone who knows me knows I LOVE her, she is the dirtiest, funniest, most offensive AND most surprising comedian working today, she’s also the most attractive too (which never hurts).

A little research reveals she had 6 shows air in Feb and March of 2007 and you can watch video from the show here, here, here, here and eventually here too!

Thanks to frankufotos Lingerie for the above picture, probably the closest thing anyone outside of Jimmy Kimmel will get to Sarah Silverman porn.

I don’t think anyone is as excited about this as I am!

I Want Someone to Eat Cheese With (me too!)

I want to eat cheese with Sara Silverman too!

Photo originated here

OK, you know I wanted to see this movie from my previous post.

I just got back from seeing the show on opening night at the IFC center here in Manhattan, Jeff Garlin came by to answer questions and thank everyone for coming before the show started. That was really cool. I heard he would be there for opening night after seeing him at Upright Citizens Brigade on Labor Day.

First off, I thought the movie was very funny, I was cracking up for a good portion of this film (which is pretty impressive considering it was only 80min). Sarah Silverman’s part at times seemed WAY too good to be true and it felt like it was TOTALLY written by a guy (it WAS written, directed and produced by Jeff Garlin himself), but at the end of the movie, it all made sense.

There are cameos from some really funny and recognizable actors that you would never expect to see in the film, like Amy Sedaris and Dan Castellaneta. When was the last time you SAW Dan Castellaneta (yes yes, he was the man of many voices in The Simpsons Movie, but you didn’t see him there).

My main problem with the movie was not even really a fault of the movie itself. After about the first 10 minutes of the film, the sound got all garbled and everyone started to sound like they were underwater. I ducked out to tell the IFC center staff and about 15 minutes later they managed to fix it. The problem was that the fix didn’t last, the actors were underwater all over again only 10 minutes later. I HAD to wait for a slow scene (which was tough to do) to duck out and tell the IFC staff AGAIN, but for most of the rest of the movie the sound improved but it never went fully back to normal. There were also two scenes in the film where I caught the boom mic falling into the shot and at first I thought it was the fault of the movie itself, but once the sound in the theater kept getting submerged underwater, I realized it was more likely that the problem was with the projectionist (or lack thereof) at the IFC Center. I KNEW I enjoyed the film when I realized that even with all the projection and sound problems, I didn’t ask for my $$$ back from IFC (those who know me, know how much I hate being ripped off by that kind of garbage).

I don’t want to end this post on a bad note though. Go out, take the effort to find this movie. It is getting no press at all. Just don’t see it at the IFC Center if you can help it! You WILL enjoy it.
