World’s Greatest Dad Review

I usually don’t review movies I don’t see in theaters, but I made an exception for World’s Greatest Dad, which is open in select theaters but I was only able to see this film on demand, but I was glad that I had the option to watch the move on demand. I only heard about this film after hearing the film’s writer/director, comedian Bobcat Goldthwait’s appearance on the Adam Carolla podcast (iTunes subscribe here).

The movie stars Robin Williams as a teacher raising his teenage son and the film mainly revolves around the school that he teaches in and his son attends. I do not want to give too much away, but this is a DARK film and while I was watching it, once I got towards the end of the film, I was baffled at how Goldthwait would end the movie. The film is all about a horrible event that happens but then gets covered up and the cover up gets a ball rolling that Robin Williams quickly loses control of. The film is very creepy and interesting, but Robin Williams played his part in a very subdued way and those types of performances are usually his best. If you can find this small film, I would go see it, but just remember, it’s not a happy happy fun time movie, even though it is directed by and stars a comedian. It was also fun to see some of the minor roles in this film were played by some recognizable faces as well, Geoffrey Pierson from Dexter and Unhappily Ever After and Henry Simmons from NYPD Blue.

The Hangover Review

In today’s movie market, an R rated comedy seems like a rarer and rarer thing. The common wisdom is that for a movie to draw in more money, the film makers have been trying to open up their films to a wider (and younger) audience, so they have strived to maintain the PG13 rating for their movie. The best example of this from recent history that comes to mind is the latest installment of the Die Hard series, Live Free or Die Hard. This film got huge attention after the film’s star, Bruce Willis publicly complained about the makers cutting down the movie to maintain the PG13 rating after all three previous Die Hard films had been R rated. I remember being very excited to see Live Free or Die Hard, until I heard about this story and ultimately, because of this, I waited to catch this film on DVD.

This film, The Hangover, though is definitely a great argument against this trend. This is through and through an R rated comedy and pretty much every aspect of the film that necessitates the R rating makes this film so much fun to watch. This was a thoroughly enjoyable and hilarious film, with some great scenes with Zach Galifianakis, Jeffrey Tambor and Daily Show regulars Ed Helms and Rob Riggle.

I don’t want to give too much away, but this is definitely one bachelor party comedy where I’m glad that what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas… and that we get to laugh at the whole thing from the sidelines, especially when we get some crazy scenes with dangerous celebrity pets!

John Hodgman and President Barack Obama at the 2009 Radio and TV Correspondents’ Dinner

Last week was the 2009 Radio and TV Correspondents’ Dinner. The main speakers were President Barack Obama and comedian John Hodgman. I have provided the Obama speech above and the Hodgman speech below, both speeches are funny, but Hodgman’s Nerd vs Jock speech is great, but if you can answer all of Hodgman’s questions without problem, then all I can say is wow…

Jim Cramer Guests on The Daily Show After Jon Stewart Bashed CNBC

After Jon Stewart slammed CNBC, Jim Cramer came on The Daily Show to try and set the record strait, but again, Jon Stewart called Cramer out on some of the more outrageous things he has done both on CNBC and while being interviewed by other non-mainstream media outlets. The interview was long and I’m posting all 3 segments of the uncensored verion. Other than all the cursing from Stewart, the whole thing felt very Tim Russert-esque with Stewart calling Cramer out with statements he had previously made that were caught on tape.

Jon Stewart Bashes on Rick Santelli and CNBC

I saw this video of Jon Stewart BASHING Rick Santelli and CNBC after hearing about the story on This Week In Tech and I knew I had to come out of hibernation to post about it. This was such a great response to the insanity of CNBC’s rose colored glasses and bad reporting.

Fake Newsflash! The Onion Introduces Apple’s Macbook Wheel

I would stop posting The Onion’s videos (iTunes subscribe here)… if they weren’t consistently hilarious. This latest video is a great send up on Apple and their (at times) lemming-like hardcore fan base.

Just enjoy the absurdity of the revolutionary keyboard-less Macbook Wheel.

David Paterson Lambasted on Saturday Night Live

Over this past year, Saturday Night Live has really been nailing political commentary. Last night’s show was no different. Some of the best material was Fred Armisen lambasting NY Governor David Paterson.

It was sad though to hear that Amy Poehler is leaving SNL, but Armisen again lightened the mood (below). I’m interested to see what Amy’s new NBC show will be though.

I wish I could post the cold open from last night’s show with a Senate hearing with IL governor Rod Blagojevich, but that was not made available online by NBC… thanks NBC.

5 Second Movies

I love movies and when I stumbled on That Guy with the Glasses and found that he had a whole section of 5 secon movies, I knew I had to write about it. There are 100 videos that were recreated more or less in 5 seconds and some of his best are Edward Scissorhands, Star Wars: Episode II and Scarface. Don’t take this list to think that I actually liked Star Wars Episode II, I like to imagine that the the Star Wars prequels never actually happened, but I like Doug’s take on the movie.

Check it out and enjoy.

CollegeHumor – The Matrix Runs on Windows

I’m very partial to The Matrix. It was the first movie I’d ever seen on DVD. Well, the good people over at CollegeHumor (subscribe here) have created a funny video showing just how bad a place the matrix would be if it ran on Windows.

It’s geek hilarious, enjoy.

Old Chair / New Chair Political Ad

OK, maybe I was wrong last time, there IS one more set of campaign ads that needs to be seen this political season. They are from the sketch team Secret Pants (subscribe here) and it had me laughing.
